Permission to install double yellow lines at St Colman’s
The director of services for Mullingar Kinnegad Municipal District has confirmed to members that the council had received statutory permission from An Gardaí Síochana to install double yellow lines on the Delvin Road near St Colman's NS.
The news was welcomed by Cllr Mick Dollard, who likened the newly constructed shared pedestrian cycleway between Lakepoint and the school to a "public carpark".
"Cars are parking on top of this new shared cycleway, like it was a 'public carpark' in front of those houses next to St Colman's. The footpaths had been widened for the cyclists from the Lakepoint area to St Colman's, and people are actually parking on top of it, on the footpath," Cllr Dollard explained.
"The only way you're going to stop this behaviour is by getting a traffic warden or by involving the gardaí. I have never seen the traffic warden up there, and the only way for this exercise to stop is for people to be fined," argued Cllr Dollard, who explained that people parking there had damaged special slabs laid especially "for people with impaired vision".
Cllr Dollard warned "It's only a matter of time before an accident is going to happen".
The director of services, Martin Murray, explained that the council had to get permission from the gardaí first before installing double yellow lines at that location, which they had now received, and could therefore enforce this from happening again.
