Council announces consultation on Canal Avenue regeneration

Westmeath County Council has stared an early consultation process regarding the regeneration of lands at Canal Avenue, Mullingar.

This initial consultation is part of the preparation of a masterplan funded by the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF), which is provided to support sustainable development, as set out in Project Ireland 2040.

Westmeath County Council have engaged Turley consultants to prepare a masterplan, which is intended to positively enhance and regenerate the area with the creation of an attractive and sustainable neighbourhood for residents, visitors and investors and a place where communities can thrive.

The Canal Avenue Regeneration Project seeks to positively enhance and rejuvenate the area by creating a highly sustainable residential quarter which supports and encourages economic, social and community development and enhances connectivity to the town centre, greenways, recreational areas, the Royal Canal and River Brosna and public transport nodes.

As part of this process, Westmeath County Council is inviting all stakeholders and interested parties including residents, retailers, institutions, and businesses as well as community and sporting groups to get involved in the process and express their views and aspirations for the area to help shape and inform the masterplan.

To facilitate this engagement, Westmeath County Council is launching an online survey at www.canalavenue.ie on Tuesday May 11, 2021. The survey will close on May 25, 2021.

Westmeath County Council said the community consultation provides an opportunity for residents and business owners to have their say on what will make the Canal Avenue area a great place to live, work and enjoy, while retaining the existing residents who will see an improvement and positive change.

A dedicated information event will be held on Thursday June 10, 2021 at 6pm to discuss the project. Considering current public health restrictions, due to Covid-19, this session will take place digitally, via Zoom.
