Speed watch on Mullingar streets planned
A number of streets in Mullingar town are among the locations at which the new garda speed cameras - which came into action at midnight on Monday - are to be rolled out.A map on the Garda website gives the locations across the country identified as areas in need of speed monitoring, and among the areas marked on the map, are the entire length of Pearse Street and Austin Friars Street right up to the Dublin Bridge and out the Delvin Road, and also the entire distance from Weldon's Cross (the junction of the Ballymahon and Athlone Roads), right in along Patrick Street and up to the Green Bridge.Motorists leaving town to head to Delvin can be measured for speeding the whole way out as far as Cooksborough, and there is also a possibility of speed cameras along the first few miles of N51 from Delvin towards Athboy. Also being targeted is a stretch of road from Knockmant to the T junction before Killucan village; the village of Loughnavalley is also on the list of targeted locations, as is a long stretch at Skeaghbeg, on the Ballymahon Road; and a further stretch on that same road, at Forgney. Motorists driving towards Longford will have to be on their guard for lengthy stretches from Clonhugh to well beyond Rathowen.Anyone choosing to drive the âoldâ N6, could find themselves nabbed for speeding anywhere from Horseleap right down to Moate, and again further on from Killogeenaghan more or less right into Athlone, where the town's entire N6 bypass is being monitored.CamerasThe cameras won't all be in place all the time: the devices are described by the Gardaí as âmobile safety camerasâ, and the locations chosen are on roads which were identified âas having a significantcontinued on page 4
