Lough Owel's current water levels may be a topic of conversation for the many local people who go for regular dips there, but Irish Water says they are relatively normal for this time of year.

In a statement issued to the Westmeath Examiner, Irish Water said that the water levels in the lake are nowhere near the low levels experienced in 2017 and 2019 when households and businesses were asked to conserve water.

“Irish Water in partnership with Westmeath County Council and Inland Waterways Ireland continually monitors the water levels of Lough Owel which supplies water to Portloman Water Treatment plant serving approximately 50,000 customers in Mullingar and surrounds. Water levels in Lough Owel are not at critically low levels experienced previously.

While the water levels at Lough Owel are not of concern, at present, Irish Water says that “water conservation is always an important message”.

“Water conservation is always an important message and it is important that we are mindful of their water consumption and conserve wherever possible. There are very useful tips on conservation for the family and businesses on our website www.water.ie/conservation.”
