Wants sign erected at the old gaol wall

A local councillor has this week lamented the fact that there is no identifying signs on one of Mullingar’s heritage sites – the portion of jail wall still standing.

"There is absolutely nothing," said Cllr Mick Dollard at the November meeting of the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad.

Cllr Dollard had a meeting on the agenda asking if the district had any plans for the erection information signs relating to historical features of Mullingar in advance of the 2022 Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann.

The official response provided to Cllr Dollard stated that the fleadh committee will be working with various sections of the council to promote the heritage and tourism attractions in both the district and county.

Mentioning the jail in particular, Cllr Dollard asked if his motion could be referred to the county heritage officer.

Council official Pat Keating assured Cllr Dollard that both the heritage officer and the tourism officers will be involved in the process.

Arts centre

Cllr Dollard also proposed that the district erect a sign at the Market Square indicating the location of Mullingar Arts Centre, and was told a sign will be ordered and erected at that location.
