Candlelight vigil and prayer service in memory of Ashling Murphy at Emper NS

The community of Emper, like all communities throughout Ireland, were shocked and saddened by the tragic death of Ashling Murphy, and, on Monday January 17, on the eve of Ashling’s funeral, a candlelight vigil and prayer service, organised by Patrick Byrne, took place outside of Scoil Naomh Bhríde, Emper in her memory.

The school was a fitting setting as Ashling was a cherished primary school teacher.

Women of all ages from the Emper community and beyond were involved in reading, singing and playing music at the solemn and prayerful vigil. The vigil was also supported by many males in our community, showing that everyone should stand in solidarity to end violence against women.

During the vigil, those present prayed for Ashling, her family, friends and all women living in fear and suffering at this time. They also remembered other women who died in tragic circumstances.

The organisers extend our thanks to all those who attended and participated in the vigil, and offered a special word of gratitude to all the members of the community who read, played music and sang.

The service could not have taken place without the help and support of Kathryn Keenan (principal), the staff and students of Emper National School.

May Ashling Murphy Rest in Eternal Peace. Leaba i Measc na Naomh.
