Delight at return of Candlemas vespers in Mullingar

Members of various religious orders as well as the religious of the Meath diocese were present for a special evening of prayer and vespers at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Mullingar on Sunday.

Held to mark the feast of Candlemas (which falls on February 2), the ceremony saw candles blessed by Bishop Tom Deenihan, a tradition that commemorates the presentation of Our Lord at the Temple as a firstborn son and the attendance of the Blessed Virgin for purification.

Due to Covid, it was the first time in two years that the diocese was able to hold the ceremony, and poignantly, Bishop Deenihan named those in religious life in the diocese who died in the intervening period.
