More seats needed along canal
More seats are needed at key locations on the banks of the Royal Canal around Mullingar, according to the town mayor, Cllr Aoife Davitt. Speaking at the monthly meeting of Mullingar Kinnegad Municipal District, she said it is a widely used amenity, but some of the seating is not accessible if the Waterways Ireland gate is locked.
She was supported by Cllr Denis Leonard, who felt that seating should be provided where possible along the canal so as to encourage people to use the walkway.
Cllr Hazel Smyth agreed that more seating and picnic benches along the canal are needed, while Cllr Frank McDermott felt it was important to provide seating for grandparents going along to watch and encourage their grandchildren taking part in water sports.
