Sirens in Bloom – James Joyce’s Women – photo exhibition at the Atrium

Westmeath County Council are hosting at the Atrium gallery a collection of photographs by Tom Lawlor which was born from conversations with Darina Gallagher, director of James Joyce Centre and Leo O’Connor of Suileir.

For the centenary celebrations of Ulysses 100, they set about finding a voice for the many female characters in Joyce’s epic novel, and Tom decided he could re-imagine the energy and power of the women of Ulysses and tell their stories through vibrant portraits of contemporary Dubliners.

Tom Lawlor is an Irish photographer with an international reputation. He worked as a photojournalist with the Irish Times for 17 years and his commissions included assignments in Northern Ireland, Russia, India, Bangladesh, Africa, China and Thailand.

His publications include: Dublin – One in a Thousand, Tom Lawlor at the Gate and Ways of Knowing. Fulfilling his love of Joyce’s Ulysses, ‘Sirens in Bloom’ is his response to the centenary anniversary of the publication.

The official opening of the exhibition was on Thursday last, June 2 and it runs to June 17.
