WATCH: Keena shines for Rovers in famous European victory
Sligo Rovers 2 Motherwell 0
He may not have got on the scoresheet but Aidan Keena had a role in both of the goals that helped Sligo Rovers see off Motherwell in The Showgrounds last night to secure a place in the next round of the Europa Conference League qualifiers.
Leading one nil after the first leg in Fir Park last week, Rovers got off to the perfect start when Shane Blaney rifled a free kick into the top right hand corner of the net from close to 35 yards out after Keena was fouled in the third minute.
In time added on at the end of a match in which Sligo never looked in danger of relinquishing their lead, the former Mullingar Athletic man turned goal maker when his perfectly weighted through ball was finished to the back of the net by substitute Max Mata.
Keena, who has enjoyed a stunning start to his career in the north west, was one of Sligo's standout performers on a night that will live long in the memory of their fans.
He and his team mates will now face Viking Stavanger in Norway next Thursday evening in the third round of the qualifiers. Regardless of the result in the next round, Sligo Rovers are also guaranteed €850,000 in prize money.
