Wallace wants industrial site in Kinnegad
Cllr Emily Wallace has argued that there should be an “identified” industrial site in Kinnegad that might help attract economic activity to the area.
At the September monthly meeting of Mullingar Municipal District (MMDC), Cllr Wallace asked that the MMDC outline what industrial sites, if any, it has identified in Kinnegad.
Pointing out that there is a population of around 2,500 there of whom around 1,000 are in employment to which, largely, they have to commute, she suggested that the MMDC take a proactive role in providing an industrial site in Kinnegad.
The response from the MMDC said that the Kinnegad Service Plan, which is included in the Westmeath County Development Plan 2014-2020, provides for two large tracts of land zoned for enterprise and employment uses to the east and west of the town.
“The combined area of lands zoned for enterprise and employment use in the town is 12.74 hectare,” the reply said, adding that along with these, lands located at the junction of the M4 and the M6 which are zoned for commercial use, will be the subject of a Local Area Plan arising from their strategic setting.
Cllr John Shaw supported Cllr Wallace's call and said he would go so far as to say that the MMDC should consider buying a site in Kinnegad for designation as an industrial site.
“It would be a good long-term move for the council to make,” he said.
