Lady Captain wins Lady Presidents’ Prize
Sunday September 12th saw the ladies take to the fairways for the final major of the year. Our Lady President Rosaleen Shaw had rescheduled her day due to our team commitments in Tramore. Well over 100 golfers turned out to play for this most coveted prize. Preferred lies were the order of the day due to the recent heavy rain.Although rain was forecast it held off and conditions were ideal for golf. This was reflected in the scoring.There was a huge roar of delight when the winner was announced. None other than the lady captain Brege McCarrick took the spoils to the delight of the lady president. After a slow start Brege had a birdie fest to win with 40 points. Runner up spot went to Rosemary Whelehan also with 40 points succumbing to the superior finishing power of the lady captain; indeed Rosemary also finished runner up in the lady captain’s prize event earlier in the year.The best gross of the day was won by the ever consistent Fiona Burke. Third place went to the in-form Fiona O’Riordan with thirty eight points. Miriam McManus was fourth and fifth place went to Tina Murphy both with 37 points. Categories one, two and three were won by Patience Collier, Josephine Purcell and Celine Whitelaw respectively. The past presidents winner was Mandy Reilly whilst keeping it in the family Kathleen Reilly had the best senior nett score.The junior prize went to Sinead Nolan (36) with 38 points and Pat Murray won the beginners’ prize. Helen Collier won the front nine and Ann Fagan won the back. Catherine Talbot won the senior 9 hole competition. A large crowd attended the presentation where more than one song was sung. Lady President Rosaleen thanked the Lady Captain and her committee, Pat Liddy and his staff the catering and bar staff and club manager Sean. Fiona Burke had the best gross score whilst Tina Murphy returned a fine 39 points to take third place.Miriam McManus has organised a fashion show to showcase local retailers for tonight, Wednesday, September 15. Models have been flown in at great expense to show clothes from Chamarie, Cocoon, Fashion Shop, Khan and Tatters. The catwalk opens at 8pm in the golf club. Tickets will be available on the door. All are welcome. Proceeds will go toward the cost of our teams in the All-Ireland finals in Donabate.Long handicapLast Thursday’s weekly event for the long handicap fraternity was kindly sponsored by Hugh Woodhouse and again attracted a fine entry over nine holes. The winner with a super twenty three points was seventeen handicapper Gerry Caffrey. Gerry had the minimum to spare over Tom Moore (18) and P.J.Glennon (19), with the former getting second spot on the tie break rule. Presentation of prizes is on this Thursday evening in conjunction with the last long handicap competition of the season, which is, as is tradition being sponsored by our captain Liam. On that day also is the final of the Swarbrigg Brothers’ long handicap match play event and the Joe Maguire memorial perpetual trophy, for the season’s most consistent player will be decided and presented on the evening.Greville Arms Hotel open mixed foursomes on Sunday nextThe B.R.S. is now taking entries for the Greville Arms Hotel open mixed foursomes for next Sunday, September 19 and it is advised to get your names and your visiting friends on the time sheet at the earliest convenience.Tudenham Cup finalWe compliment Tullamore and Delvin Castle on their very sporting and high quality final played on Saturday last; and while we congratulate Tullamore on their narrow 3-2 win in an exciting final, we commiserate with our near neighbours, who have been beaten in this popular fourball inter club competition three times in the past five years.Don’t be too despondent lads; your day will surely come soon.Confined matchplay eventsAll our confined club matchplay competitions are reaching conclusions at the moment and while we compliment those below who are still in contention, let me congratulate all who made such good efforts to play the matches on schedule. Pat Dunne Memorial mixed the finalists are Albert Lee and Doreen Casey, who play Billy Flanagan and Pauline Farrell.In the club handicap matchplay Pat Curran awaits the winner of the Justin Wallace/Tim O’Sullivan semi-final encounter.In the club fourball Mark Keane and Paul Burke along with Donald Bell and Tommy Lyng are in the semi final and await the winners of the Brendan Buckley, Niall Kennedy combo who, in turn await the winners of the McLoughlins (Mark and Des) and Gerry Purcell and Dave Farrelly clash.In the club foursomes for the Victor Woods Memorial trophies’ semi finals the Tom McCormack and Philip Hand pairing play Frank McGinty and Finian Whelehan, while in the other half, Mark and his dad John Keane play Mick McCarthy and Tom Daly.
