Olympic medal winner John Treacy to visit Colaiste Mhuire

Olympic medalist and twice world cross country champion John Treacy is attending the Colaiste Mhuire, Mullingar annual awards ceremony this Thursday May 24.As chief executive of the Irish Sports Council, he will speak on the importance of participation in sport, and make a presentation to the junior boys cross country team who won the all-Ireland team title in March at Galway.Treacy (born June 4 1957 in Villierstown near Dungarvan, County Waterford) attended St Anne's Post-Primary School in Cappoquin, famously running the 12km to school every morning, and later graduated from Providence College.In 1978 and 1979 he won the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Glasgow and Limerick.At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles he won a silver medal in the marathon, placing Ireland 33rd on the medals table.In the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, he was ninth in the 10,000-metre final before crowning his athletics career with the silver medal in the men's marathon.
