Aoife McCarthy retains All-Ireland title

Mullingar ace, Aoife McCarthy turned in a clinical exhibition of top class handball when she retained her All-Ireland Ladies Junior ‘B’ Singles title in Broadford, Co. Limerick last Saturday. Crowned champion for the first time in 2009, Aoife was at the top of her form as she lowered the colours of home favourite, Siobhán Lehane in straight games.Determined to retain her coveted title, Aoife powered into the opening game and hardly allowed her opponent to settle. The issue was never in doubt from the off as Aoife hammered out an emphatic 21-4 victory. The Mullingar girl was equally as impressive in the second game, taking a stranglehold hold early and claiming her second All-Ireland title with a 21-7 win.Aoife will be hoping that Saturday’s success is the first part of an All-Ireland for, along with Tang’s Niamh Egan, she will lock horns with Siobhan again on Saturday, September 25 on home soil when the Limerick woman will be joined by Jacqui Enright in the All-Ireland Junior ‘B’ Doubles final. The Westmeath duo are an experienced partnership and, given the manner of Aoife’s victory on Saturday last, they will be approaching the doubles decider, to be played in Mullingar, in a very confident mode.
