Collentine proposes CCTV for canal

Cllr Bill Collentine is seeking the opinions of local people about his plan concerning monitored CCTV along the canal in Mullingar. He said he intends to ask Westmeath County Council whether installing CCTV to monitor the canal is feasible.

“It would provide a further level of security to users of the amenity, deter antisocial behaviour and allow gardaí to monitor an area that allows access to the whole town at various points,” said Cllr Collentine.

“The Royal Canal and greenway are tremendous assets to the community, for tourism and as a local amenity, and protecting and enhancing that space will bring great benefits to the town.”

Cllr Collentine also plans to ask for updates on lighting in the area, as he has found that some is substantially damaged or not working, and the addition of lighting under bridges where there is none.

“It’s vital that area of the town be given immediate attention to allow locals to enjoy a unique space while feeling safe as much as possible.

“I will be conducting a poll on the issue on my social media channels in the coming weeks and invite your feedback on my proposed plans.”

Additional seating

Additional seating is to be provided in Mullingar this year, it was announced at the March meeting of the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad.

Cllr Mick Dollard had called for extra seating to encourage pedestrians and give people a place to sit and communicate in comfort.

Cllr Dollard was also told that the cul-de-sac at houses in Glenview Heights, Dublin Road, Mullingar will be considered in the 2023 estimates.
