Choral Society plan for May concert with soprano Claudia Boyle
For many years Mullingar Choral Society followed up their Annual Christmas concert with a Spring concert, usually in March. This year sees a change in format with a Concert in May. The venue for the concert this year has also been changed with us moving to the more intimate surroundings of St Paul’s Church.
But the big news is that the society will be joined by none other than Claudia Boyle, internationally acclaimed Irish Soprano, as our soloist.
The centre piece of the programme is Misa Criolla by Ariel Ramirez. It is a mass sung in Spanish based on South American folk music, particularly the rhythms and melodies of Argentina. This is the first time that Mullingar Choral Society will have performed this piece and with a soloist of the caliber of Claudia Boyle it should be one of the highlights of the evening.
Added to this are works by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Bruckner, Haydn and the haunting Traditional Irish piece 'Dulaman'. The choir will be joined by the soloist for a few of these and she herself will perform a number of solo pieces including Gershwin’s Summertime, The Doll Song by Offenbach and pieces by Donizetti and Handel.
Fresh from starring in the role of Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier with Irish National Opera, Irish soprano Claudia Boyle has secured a stellar international profile through highly-acclaimed performances in Paris, Zurich, Rome and New York.
She recently made her house debut at Opéra national de Paris as Dede in Bernstein’s A Quiet Place conducted by Kent Nagano and directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski. Career highlights include Konstanze in Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and Komische Oper Berlin, Alice in Gerald Barry’s Alice’s Adventures Under Ground at The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, under Thomas Adès, Adina in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore at Semperoper Dresden and Norwegian National Opera, Leila in Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers for English National Opera, Tytania in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream conducted by James Conlon at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, and the title role in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor with Danish National Opera. Last month Claudia was the Soprano Soloist in The Creation by Haydn with Maynooth University Choral Society.
All in all a wonderful evening of the highest quality is guaranteed. Why not come along to St Paul’s Church on Sunday May 7 at 7.30pm and welcome the Summer in song!
