Alex celebrates 100 years

Mrs MacDougall with staff at Newbrook Nursing Home.Alexandra MacDougall was surrounded by family, friends, and the family dog, Trio, who got a special pass into Newbrook Nursing Home for the celebration of her 100th birthday on Thursday May 11 last.
Born in Lisburn in 1923, Alex, as she is fondly known, came to Mullingar in 1958 with her husband Ian, who was appointed Rector of All Saints Church, and later went on to become Canon MacDougall.
Alexandra and Ian had two children, Angela and Ewan, seven grandchildren, including the acclaimed actor Niamh Algar, and four great-grandchildren.
“Their ministry in the town was enormously appreciated,” said Rev Canon Alastair Graham, who was present for the 100th birthday party, and sang the praises of his dear friend.
He read from Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians and gave a blessing from the Book of the Hebrews.
“She and Canon MacDougall came at a time when the cooperation of churches would not have been common and they went out of their way to engage themselves in the community of Mullingar and to ensure the Church of Ireland people played a role in the life and community of the town,” Canon Graham said.
“As a person, she is just delightful, and that is reflected in the many friends, family and neighbours who came out to celebrate with her on her birthday.
“She is held in admiration and affection, and I think that is because Alex is someone who upheld the finest values of humanity, and always looked to the best in people,” Canon Graham said.
