New captains elected at Delvin Castle Golf Club

With 2008 closing, and the new 2009 golfing year set to open, the lady members of Delvin Castle Golf Club welcome their new club captain, Annette King, and her vice-captain, Elaine Doyle, while the men"s section has elected Mr. Jim Fulham as skipper for the coming year.All captains and vice-captains have been wished the very best of luck by their peers ahead of the forthcoming golfing season, and it is hoped that there will be plenty of collaboration between the sections in the New Year.Saturday, December 13 saw members of Delvin Castle Golf Club host a thoroughly enjoyable Christmas party and presentation night in the clubhouse on the Collinstown Road. The club has acknowledged the great effort made by all those who assembled and wrapped all the Christmas hampers, or those who bought prizes during the year.Finally, and most importantly, the Ladies" Sections" traditional event, 'Nollaig na mBan', takes place on Wednesday, January 7, with lady members meeting in the clubhouse at 10.30am for a cup of tea, before the 9-hole scramble teams are selected.Weather permitting, the event should be a success, and members are invited to come back to the clubhouse afterwards for the annual lunch and presentation. All members are welcome, and a fun day is guaranteed.Christmas arrives in ClonmellonSanta arrived in Clonmellon village on Sunday of last week, December 14, by fire engine and assisted in the official switch on of the Christmas lights in the village. The event - organised by Clonmellon"s hard-working and proactive Community Council - was a great success, with a very large crowd in attendance.The Clonmellon Children"s Choir, lead by Joan Daly, Karina Buckley and Margaret Dunne sang Christmas Carols, while the crowd was treated to mulled wine and a selection of beautiful baking at the 'Annual Cake Sale' which was held at the same time in the Market Square Yard.The Christmas lights were switched on by John Dobson Farrelly, who won the competition in Clonmellon National School to officiate. The village looks great, and its all thanks to the local community, who pulled together to make it all happen.Clonmellon Community Council would like to thank everyone in the community who contributed both financially and voluntarily to the 'Light Up Our Village' campaign; the local householders and businesses who cooperated by giving permission for electrical sockets and wiring to be placed on their houses and premises.Thanks also to electrical contractor Matty Conaty and staff, Raistín Rovers Soccer Club committee members, Market Square Committee, Ns Gua Chinese Restaurant, Thos Henry and Family, and Londis Supermarket, ClonmellonA very special thank you to residents Larry and Nora Clancy for their valued cooperation, to local publicans, Seamus and Marie Mulvaney for their support and for housing the valuable equipment at their premises; to Jim & Lil Fitzsimons and Paschal Flood for their continued and very much valued support and cooperation in completing this major task.On Saturday, December 20 our Annual Raffle takes place at Mulvaney"s Pub, Clonmellon. Squares on the Christmas tree are €5 each, and are available from Londis Supermarket; ceol agus craic will be in abundance on the night, and all are very welcome.Finally, Clonmellon Community Council has wished all residents of Clonmellon and surrounding districts a happy and peaceful Christmas, and a prosperous New Year.'No complaints' about Delvin estateWestmeath County Council has received 'no complaints' about the Lacora Glen estate at Clonyn, Delvin, and will proceed with taking in charge measures pending a 'full compliance check'.Cllr. Paddy Hill (Fianna Fáil) requested an update with regard to Lacora Glen in a question tabled at the recent Coole Area Committee meeting in Castlepollard.Council officials said that the planning permission for the development has expired.'This estate is substantially complete, we are not aware of any complaints... but a full compliance check with planning permission will be carried out in the New Year and any necessary enforcement action will be taken,' the Council reply said.
