Investigation ongoing into Austin Friar Street incident

A juvenile has been released on bail after being arrested in connection with the much-publicised incident on Austin Friar Street, Mullingar, last Wednesday afternoon in which a car was badly damaged.

Video footage on social media appeared to show a number of individuals smashing windows on a car that was parked on the side of the street during the incident which occurred at around 3pm. A window in the door of a nearby retail unit was also smashed during the altercation.

It is believed that the incident and a clash in D’Alton Park the night before are linked to an ongoing feud.

A member of the public who witnessed the incident on Austin Friar Street on Wednesday afternoon told the Westmeath Examiner that those involved “were armed with what looked like axes and bats”.

“It was awful. A few businesses closed their doors and I saw one car being badly smashed up.”

At a meeting of Westmeath Joint Policing Committee (JPC) in Mullingar yesterday morning, Superintendent David Nolan told members that the investigation is ongoing and that CCTV footage has been examined.

He added that local gardaí are working with the Traveller Mediation Group in a bid to bring an end to the dispute. He also said that “people putting up posts on social media isn’t helping matters”.

When contacted by the Westmeath Examiner, the Garda Press Office issued this statement:

“Gardaí responded to reports of a public order disturbance at Austin Friar Street, Mullingar shortly after 3pm on Wednesday July 5. Criminal damage was caused to car in the course of the incident.

“There were no reports of any injuries. Those involved dispersed on arrival of gardaí. Enquires are ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Mullingar Garda Station 044 9384000 or the Garda Confidential Line 18006661112.”
