Oldcastle Agricultural Show returns this Sunday

YouTube stars Farmer Phil and singing sensation Fr Ray Kelly return to Gilson Park along with local musicians, line dancing and Irish dancing for Oldcastle Agricultural Show on Sunday, July 16.

The show offers substantial prize money and entries are now being taken in the 380-plus classes in the cattle, sheep, horse, poultry and home industry competitions at oldcastleshow.ie.

The Irish Aberdeen Angus Association is holding the Growvite All-Ireland finals in Gilson Park this year. It has a prize fund of €6,000. Clarke Machinery Group sponsor ‘The Best Young Farmer Competition’, which is open to 16-21-year-olds. They will take part in a written general agricultural knowledge test, and demonstrate their livestock knowledge and tractor skills.

There will be a prize fund of €1,500 for the winner of the Oldcastle All Ireland Final Young Beef Bullock Championship. Traditional Meat Company, Oldcastle, sponsor the new Champion Continental Bullock or Heifer Class.

The North East Texel Society are also holding their Club championship at Oldcastle Agricultural Show, sponsored by Univet. New Beltex and Blue Texel classes also feature – and sheep from everywhere are welcome, the show committee say.

The ‘Family Riding Pony Ring’ will have fun events for two legged and four legged superstars, alongside the usual horse and pony classes. Returning this year is the popular Working and Ridden Hunter classes.

The show committee said, the ‘Greatest Cockrel of Oldcastle’ competition will cause plenty of feathers to be ruffled! And the new goat classes will attract some bucks!

The automobile section will have a large range of vintage tractors and machinery including vintage threshers.

Shearers are flocking to the show to take part in the junior and senior classes and the show hall has every class, from turf to jam, cakes and decorated wellies and stones. The Dog Show has classes for purebred and mongrels.

Little Miss Oldcastle and the Young Bachelor of Oldcastle will also be crowned on the day and spectacular birds of prey are flying into Oldcastle for the day, and Joey Burns will display his sculpting wood art.
