Q&A: Oz-based Irish singer Fieldsy looks forward to the fleadh ‘buzz’
Australian-based singer Fieldsy made her fleadh debut last year with the group The Divine Trinity. She is looking forward to returning for a second time this year. When she was younger, Fieldsy moved to Kinnegad from Dublin with her parents and lived there for 11 years. Some of her family live in Mullingar, so she visits the town regularly. We caught up with her ahead of this year's event.
What are your earliest and favourite memories of the fleadh?
I remember the buzz each year when the fleadh was coming up and the excitement of finding out which county would be hosting it. Seeing news coverage of the sheer volume of people attending the event was surreal. My first fleadh wasn't until last year in Mullingar.
When was your last time in Mullingar?
I was on tour in Ireland in March and I stopped off to visit my brother and family who live in Mullingar. I used to live in Westmeath so I know the area well and love it.
What are your interests outside of music?
Pretty much all my interests stay within the creative range. I love to write short stories or spoken word pieces. I'm a mum of three boys who also love to play different instruments, so we spend a lot of time at lessons and practice.
What music did you listen to growing up that has led to your career?
Everything from Christy Moore, Sinéad O’Connor, The Cranberries, to boy bands and even rock bands.
Aside from performing, what are you most looking forward to at the event this year?
Seeing the Wolfe Tones play live for the first time. I was brought up on their music so it will be a special treat to finally see them.
