Heritage week outing to vernacular cottage
Westmeath Archaeological and Historical Society host an outing to one of the best preserved examples of a thatched clay walled cottage in the country on Saturday, 19 August at 2.30pm.
The main speaker, Dr Barry O’Reilly, has written extensively on this theme, and is the acknowledged expert on thatched and metal roofed houses in Ireland. The owner Martin Manning, who has lovingly conserved this important part of our heritage will also speak, as will Seamus O’Brien from the society. All welcome.
Details: Clonaboy, Rathowen; Eircode: near N91 RD34.
Parking on site.
This is a chance to view a thatched cottage which was recently rethatched, and hear a talk on our vernacular architecture by Dr O’Reilly, architectural conservation advisor, National Inventory of Architectural Heritage, Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage; Mr O’Brien, Westmeath Archaeological and Historical Society, and Mr Manning, owner of cottage.
