Mullingar girls top the table after three good victories

Mullingar Heifers 11 Railway Union 5

On a sunny Sunday afternoon, the Mullingar Heifers headed off to Railway Union where they knew they would have a battle on their hands.

There was a lot of back and forward between the two teams to begin and it wasn’t until the twenty-fifth minute that Railway managed to get over the try line. A break on the wing from Railway, despite the attempts of the Mullingar girls couldn’t stop the try, the angle bested the kicker and there was no conversion to leave it 5-0.

Twenty minutes of pure defence on the Mullingar side was ended finally with a penalty, which was incredibly scored by our kicker and No. 10 Ellie to make it 5-3 to the home side at half-time.

Another penalty soon into the second half, excellently kicked by Ellie again, brought us ahead for the first time in the game, to make the score 5-6, Mullingar.

Only a point up, the women knew that they couldn’t take the foot off the pedal. After another spell of relentless Mullingar defence, the ball was won back.

Once in possession the Heifers were pushing and pushing for a try. Finally a penalty came in the Railway 22.

The women were hungry to get over the gain line; a tap and go allowed our quick thinking second row Susie to dive over the top of a ruck to take the points. No conversion put them six ahead, 11-5.

Great tackling put in by back rows Georgia Eadaoin, Kara and Sophie stopped their half back pairing from quick breaks. The determined back line of Ellie, Aine, Winnie and Foxey kept our defensive line intact.

Try saving tackles by our wingers Emily and Molly kept Railway out to the very last second leaving the final score, with another Mullingar win, at 11-5.

Player of the match was heavily deliberated by management after this performance, but the quick thinking and calm composure of the out half Ellie gains her the title.

The girls now sit top of the table with 14 points after three games, but with other teams with a game in hand the women know they’ve a target on their backs now. They will use this week off to prepare for Barnhall at home in two weeks where another win will be the target.
