Turkey hunt thwarted by the weather

After the fabulous spell of weather of late, the competition programme for both the ladies and gents was affected by heavy overnight frost over the past week or so.Sunday’s turkey competition had to be curtailed as play could not commence until ten o’clock. However there was a fine turnout for the remainder of the fine day and the winners will be notified in due course. On the previous week-end the men’s competition committee organised an eighteen hole sweepstake and the scoring in the good conditions was excellent. The top score was returned by Michael Maguire, whose forty one points just pipped Philip Butterly.Gerry Caffrey collected third spot, while the junior prize was won by the promising Jordan Warde. A full programme of turkey competitions is laid on from now till the start of Christmas and it is hoped to run a shotgun start event (or two) including breakfast in the middle to latter part of November, weather permitting, of course.Sweepstake results:Winner - Michael Maguire (16) 41 points; second - Philip Butterly (19) 40 points; third - Gerry Caffrey (17) 38 points; junior - Jordan Warde (19) 37 points.SeniorsLast Tuesday, October 19 saw a fine turnout of seniors for their weekly get together and the scoring over the twelve holes was quite good. The popular winner of the first prize was Frank Mc Keon, who just pipped Conor Maguire. We look forward to the Christmas hampers competition, which will be on the cards very soon.Ladies BranchJack Frost announced his return on Wednesday last which kept the course closed until 11am. The course looked fabulous, bathed in winter sunshine with a fine frosting. Quite a few golfers elected to wait for play to begin. It was decided to run two separate sweepstake competitions over nine holes to ensure everyone got a game.In all fifty one women played. Winner of the front nine competition was our Minor Cup Captain, Carmel Maher with an excellent 20 points. Runner up was Jean Smyth also with 20points who pipped Ann Grehan on the count back. The back nine went to Susan Trapp with 18 points. Julie Magan was next with 15points beating Siobhan O’Donnell-Murphy on the finishing holes. With Jack Frost promising to be around a fair bit this year it was great to get some play in on a frosty morning. Congratulations to Anne Duffy who has been selected to attend the Rules School in St. Andrews early next year. Only the top two women in Ireland are chosen to go forward after completing the national examinations. Well done Anne. You all know to whom to bring your golf queries in future...Well done and good luckWe say well done also to young Emma Woodhouse, who has qualified for the National junior medal final, which takes place on this Thursday, October 28 in Seapoint golf links. With a bit of a rub of the green, the title could very well come our way.
