Westmeath Celebrates Heritage Week 2013
August 17 to August 25
Heritage Week in Ireland is co-ordinated by the Heritage Council in conjunction with the Department of the Arts, Heritage and The Gaeltacht and is part of European Heritage Days, which is celebrated in over 50 countries across Europe.
Westmeath Heritage Week was launched by Westmeath County Council chairman Cllr Peter Burke on August 17 in Athlone Castle Visitor Centre.
Throughout Westmeath there is an enormous selection of events and activities taking place which gives the public a rare opportunity not only to visit historical buildings and sites normally closed to the public but also lets them take part in cultural events that highlight local skills and traditions both past and present.
There are events and activities taking place all over Westmeath – Athlone, Fore, Castlepollard,
Kinnegad, Kilbeggan, Moate and Mullingar.
This year, the year of The Gathering, Kinnegad has organised events for every day during Heritage Week to welcome home the many visitors to the town. In Athlone Luan Fest, the family fun, heritage and cultural events by the Shannon, began its activities and displays on August 10 in advance of Heritage Week and as a result there are two weeks of Heritage activities to be enjoyed in Athlone!
