Aaron Killane on target in final Westmeath darts trial of 2023
The last trial took place in Bartley's bar, Drumcree on Sunday December 10 with all to play for and positions to be won for county team.
There was huge turnout as 29 players took to the oche for the final trial and once again some super darts on the day. There were some very hard groups on the day and players had to be at there best to make it out of there groups.
Quarter-final results: Aaron Killane beat Noel Divine 3-1; Ian Kennedy beat Cormac Foley 3-2; Paul Radford beat Barry Kiernan 3-2; Mark Corrigan beat Graham Corcoran 3-1.
Semi-final results: Ian Kennedy beat Paul Radford 3-1; Aaron Killane beat Mark Corrigan 3-1.
That meant Aaron Killane took on Ian Kennedy in final, with both players making there first appearance of this year in a decider.
It was young Aaron that got off to a flyer in the first leg and never really looked back after that with some great darts in the final, running out a 4-1 winner. Certainly, it could of been a lot closer as Ian had some chances to pull back legs, but wasn’t meant to be on the day.
Congratulations to Aaron on winning his first trial and also to Ian who was unlucky in the final; well done to both players.
Captain this year is Ross Kelly who finished top overall and well deserved as he’s been in fine form all year, winning four trials with some fantastic darts. He had to throw exceptionally well in very tough finals and semi-finals to achieve top spot, so well done Ross.
Westmeath now head off to the Leinster championship in Wexford on Sunday, January 14 at which they will be hoping for a strong performance against the very best sides in the province. They will look forward the challenge knowing there in fine form heading down there.
Westmeath darts would also like to thank Bartley's bar for the excellent food and their hospitality on the day; it was much appreciated.
