Triumphant blend of sports and community spirit at Mullingar RFC

In the wake of the bustling Christmas season, Mullingar Rugby Football Club (RFC) offered a refreshing respite with a unique sporting event that not only showcased exceptional athletic camaraderie but also supported a noble cause.

The historic Bo-Jackson Cup, held in honour of the late Robbie Cooney, saw a record turnout, with the local community and sports enthusiasts converging to witness a one-of-a-kind compromise rules match between Mullingar RFC and Ballycomoyle GAA on Saturday December 30.

Kicking off at 2:00 pm, this special event featured a friendly yet competitive clash, blending elements of both Gaelic football and rugby. The teams, under the guidance of renowned managers – Alan “Buddha” Mangan and Bressie for Mullingar RFC, and Rory O’Connor of Rory’s Stories fame for Ballycomoyle – displayed exceptional skill and sportsmanship, much to the delight of the spectators.

Prior to the main event, children had the opportunity to participate in an Australian Rules Football skills session, gaining insights and tips on the game. This was not just a sporting event but a festival of sorts, with the day culminating in live music at the clubhouse, adding to the already vibrant atmosphere.

The significance of the event extended beyond the field, with substantial funds being raised for mental health charities, including Pieta House. This initiative underscored the community’s commitment to supporting important causes and remembering Robbie Cooney’s legacy.

The successful event was a testament to the strong bonds within the GAA and rugby communities in Mullingar, highlighting how sports can bring people together for a greater good. The organising committee extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who participated and contributed, making the event a resounding success.

U12 boys enjoy Aviva Stadium experience

In a heartening display of sportsmanship and resilience, the U12 boys’ team of Mullingar Rugby Club experienced an unexpected turn of events during their recent visit to the Aviva Stadium for the Leinster vs Ulster match.

The young team, who had eagerly anticipated playing at the iconic venue, faced the disappointment of their game being cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. Despite the relentless downpour, spirits remained high among the players, coaches, and parents who had made the journey to Dublin.

The team’s dedication and enthusiasm did not go unnoticed, as Leinster Rugby has extended an invitation for the Mullingar U12 boys to return to the Aviva Stadium in the near future. This gesture has been received with great excitement and anticipation by the team and Mullingar Rugby Club community.

The club extends its heartfelt thanks to the coaches, parents, and, most importantly, the players for their remarkable spirit and positivity throughout the day. The experience, albeit different from what was planned, served as a memorable and bonding experience for everyone involved. As the Mullingar Rugby Club U12 boys look forward to their return to the Aviva Stadium, they continue to demonstrate the true essence of sportsmanship and resilience in the face of unforeseen challenges.
