Here"s to healthy
Many of us have made some positive changes in the New Year and now that holiday season is upon us we worry that all our work may be undone in two weeks. Here are some ways to enjoy our holidays while maintaining our healthy lifestyle.Drink plenty of water. Going to warmer climates can leave many of us dehydrated and tired. Carry a bottle with you and aim for two litres a day.Keep activity levels up by enjoying walking, swimming, playing with your kids on the beach. Try to enjoy sightseeing tours that involve some walking.Enjoy fresh fruit and vegetables that the country has to offer. Maybe try having fruit salad for breakfast or dessert. Remember to aim for five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. When on holidays we tend to eat out in the evenings. Be aware of the bread basket. Take one piece and leave it at that. Try having a salad for starter rather than choosing a high calorie high fat ones that will fill you up, leaving little enjoyment in the main course and extra calories for you to burn off.Alcohol can leave you more dehydrated and contain calories so try to alternate alcoholic drinks with soft drinks or water and aim for some alcohol free days. After all that relax and enjoy your holidays. From Community Nutrition & Dietetic Service, Marlinstown, Mullingar. 044 93 53220 or email community.dietitians@hse.ie.
