€30,000 for Castlepollard under Town Centre First scheme

Castlepollard plan

Under the Town Centre First scheme, €30,000 has been announced for the Castlepollard plan, members of Westmeath County Council were told at their April meeting.

The council’s regeneration team has secured €5.8m for the refurbishment of the Market House and town park and work has commenced on the town park project. The next stage for the Market House is to procure design consultants to take the project to “shovel ready status”, the members were told.

Co-working hubs

The announcement that the co-working hubs in Kinnegad and Athlone are to get €1m each was welcomed by members of Westmeath County Council at the April meeting.

Cllr Denis Leonard welcomed the allocation for the co-working hub and enterprise centre in the former school master’s house in Kinnegad. He indicated that three town and village projects in Streamstown, Moate and Rathwire were also announced last week.

Cllr Paul Hogan welcomed the allocation for the Athlone smart innovation and co-working hub in the former workhouse at North Gate Street which, he said, was “an eyesore in the town for years”.

Vote of sympathy

A vote of sympathy was passed with the Dunican family and Kilbeggan Racecourse committee on the tragic death of Paddy Dunican, by members of Westmeath County Council at their April meeting.

Proposing the vote of sympathy, the cathaoirleach, Cllr Liam McDaniel, said: “Westmeath County Council has lost a great friend.”

A vote of sympathy was also passed with the family of the late Tom Seery, Mount Temple, on the proposal of leas-cathaoirleach, Cllr Louise Heavin.
