Traffic flows well after town centre lights stop working

The improved traffic flow through the centre of Mullingar at the weekend when lights stopped working at the one of the busiest junctions shows that the entire system needs to be reviewed, local councillors have said.

The traffic lights at the McDonald’s junction went on the blink on Saturday after one of the poles was apparently struck by a vehicle. However, rather than increasing congestion, traffic flow improved significantly, according to reports.

For over three years, a number of councillors, including Ken Glynn and Andrew Duncan, have been calling for the reinstatement of the roundabout at the junction, which was removed as part of the town centre enhancement works.

Critics of the current traffic management system have also repeatedly called for the reinstatement of a number of filter lanes in the town centre that had also been removed.

Speaking to the Westmeath Examiner, Cllr Ken Glynn said that the improved traffic flow through the town at the weekend is proof that the current ‘smart’ traffic lights system isn’t working.

“It proves what I have been saying for the last three and a half years. It’s clear to me that the lights have been the problem, are the problem, and will continue to be the problem.

“It was clear last Saturday when the lights were not working how smooth traffic flowed and again this morning (Monday) when repairs were going on.

“This is a clear message that the council need to start listening to the likes of me, who have continuously raised the issue for the last few years, as well as listening to the business people, who the council have agreed to meet after my motion in April to discuss the impact that the ongoing traffic problems are having on their businesses.

“The also need to start listening to the motorists who drive through the town daily to avail of the many services in Mullingar.

“These people want to spend money in the town and support local businesses. The reality is we can’t all be wrong.”

Cllr Andrew Duncan also believes that the improved traffic flow on Saturday proves that the current traffic management system needs to be scraped.

“In my mind, the system itself was designed to make it less attractive for cars to come into town.

“We were given assurances when the roundabout at McDonald’s was removed that if it didn’t work, it could go back in.”

Cllr Duncan says that the removal of the lights at the McDonald’s junction and reinstatement of the roundabout and filter lane would significantly improve traffic flow in the town centre.

“People need cars to move around. Not everyone can use a push bike,” he said.
