There were nine goals scored in total and excitement galore in the Camogie Division1 final, at the end of which St Mary’s NS, Collinstown had eight points to spare over Scoil Mhuire, Loughegar.
The Collinstown girls raced into a seven-point lead by the end of the opening quarter, courtesy of a close-range goal from Róisín O’Neill in the eighth minute, and points from the latter (one), Sophie Bartley (one) and Sarah Louise Murtagh (two – a free and a ‘35’). Ellie Kelleghan then opened the Scoil Mhuire account with a well-taken goal.
During the remainder of the first moiety, the red and white-clad outfit outscored their opponents by 3-1 (two further goals from O’Neill, one from Bartley, and a point by Murtagh from a free) to 1-0 (scored at the second attempt by Katie Raleigh). St Mary’s NS, Collinstown led by 4-5 to 2-0 at the interval.
Despite edging the second half by 2-1 to 1-1, the Scoil Mhuire, Loughegar girls were unable to fully claw back the deficit. The goals for the side in navy, maroon and white were scored by Kelleghan (direct from a ‘35’) and Holly Tuite (after a great catch), while Tuite also chipped in with a point. The winners’ tally was completed by a Murtagh point from play and a goal from Ríona Devine.
After the match, Derek Butler, the chairman of Westmeath Cumann na mBunscol, presented the cup to the winning captain, Sarah Louise Murtagh.
