Low turnout at polls in Westmeath so far

There’s been a relatively low turnout at the polls in Westmeath so far.

Just before lunch, turnout was 12.8% in the urban Mullingar area and 9% in rural Mullingar.

Similarly, turnout in urban Athlone was 12.8% before lunch and 9% in rural Athlone.

Meanwhile, one polling station in Moate has reported a turnout of 24.7% so far.

No figures are available from Kinnegad.

Polling stations opened at 7am this morning and will close at 10pm tonight.

The local election count is taking place in Moate from tomorrow.

Some 20 seats must be filled on Westmeath County Council.

Voters in Westmeath are also being asked to choose MEPs to represent them in Brussels in the Midlands North West constituency, where there are five seats up for grabs.
