Local TD hosts summer charity BBQ for hospice

North Westmeath Hospice is the recipient of the funds raised at Deputy Robert Troy’s recent charity barbecue at his Mullingar home.

A large crowd attended the annual summer event, which is now in its 10th year. Speaking to the Westmeath Examiner, Deputy Troy said that he looks forward to the barbecue and being able to give something back to local charities who do so much for the community.

“Every year we choose a charity to which we fundraise for and this year the chosen charity was North Westmeath Hospice. Obviously the hospice is a charity that is close to many people’s hearts, with most families having to avail of their good services at some stage. I was delighted to be able to select the hospice as the recipient charity this year.

“I’m also happy with the large turnout of people who came, people from across the whole of the county came and supported it in good numbers.

“Every year everything is sponsored and I want to particularly thank the people who make this possible: Buckley’s SuperValu, Wines Direct, Colin Dolan, Liz Gilhooley, Bill Collentine, Eamon McGowan, Brian Finnegan from Kepak Meats, Ballymahon, and Wholesome Kitchen here in Mullingar.

“I think we owe a debt of gratitude to businesses such as those, that when asked to support and sponsor for charity, they’re never found wanting and I think we should always consider that when we’re making our choice where we shop and who we support.

“I also want to thank the committee from North Westmeath Hospice who came along and helped with the serving of the food and preparing my home for the event.

“Really it’s a lovely social event every year, it’s my honour and I enjoy hosting this event, enjoy welcoming people to my home and raising funds for a worthy local charity.

“Donations are still coming in from people who normally would have attended or would have liked to attend but couldn’t attend, so we don’t have the final figure yet. When we have a final figure we will be having a presentation of the cheque.”
