The Leona McKenna group on stage at the Fleadh Cheoil in Wexford last week.

Westmeath acts rock Gig Rig in front of thousands

The Gig Rig is a central part of every Fleadh Cheoil and is home to the best free entertainment at the week-long festival. There was a stellar line-up this year and big names such as the Blackwater céili band, Alan Finn and friends, toy show stars ‘Cuckoo’s nest’ and the piper’s cross céilí band all graced the stage.

Westmeath musicians were included in this year’s line-up. Up and coming folk band from Mullingar, Some One’s Sons, were playing on the Friday evening and got the crowd going with well-known ballads. The group also made an appearance on the Today FM lunchtime show with Louise Cantillon last Thursday as the house band for the live broadcast from the fleadh.

Coordinator of last year’s Gig Rig in Mullingar Leona McKenna was joined by friends on stage at this year’s event. The group played a lively set of jigs, reels and more, which was a major crowd pleaser for the hundreds who gathered at the sun soaked Quays in Wexford.

The legendary Mick Foster was one of the final acts on the Gig Rig for the week. He was also joined by friends from Westmeath and Longford to play an entertaining mix of songs and music.

The Gig Rig was a popular feature at this year’s fleadh once again and the Westmeath participants added greatly to the fantastic music on display throughout the week.
